Campus Housing Student Learning Outcomes

Self Awareness

We will prepare residents to live autonomously, explore who they are, and understand the importance of personal values. Residents should:

  • Build an understanding of self-identity
  • Develop an awareness of personal impact on their environment and others, including issues of conflict resolution,
    lawful behavior, and sexual misconduct
  • Engage in conversations surrounding independence and self-identity exploration
  • Identify and communicate their personal values
  • Practice behaviors aligned with their personal values
  • Understand personal agency in affecting positive change in themselves and their community

 

Academic Excellence

We will create an out-of-class experience that strengthens residents’ educational pursuit. Residents should:

  •  Build their academic network of peers, university staff, and faculty members
  • Develop their academic plan and goals for the year
  • Engage in academic intervention conversations
  • Identify and utilize academic resources on campus
  • Practice effective research and study skills
  • Understand how to complement their in-class learning experience with outside resources

 

Community Membership

We will create space for our residents to feel connected to and accepted by others. Residents should:

  • Build a deeper understanding of their and others’ intersecting identities and how they form a cohesive environment
  • Develop healthy relationships with members of their floor and building
  • Engage with UIC or the student body through volunteering, involvement in student organizations, and/or on-campus
    employment
  • Identify peers who share their interests
  • Practice community learning by seeking resources, advice, and support from community members
  • Understand the value of being connected to a diverse network of community members

 

Safety & Well-Being

We will educate and inform students how to maintain positive well-being and personal safety as a member of the UIC community and resident of the city of Chicago. Residents should:

  • Build on their idea of what positive well-being is and personalizing what well-being looks like for each individual
  • Develop positive and healthy behaviors that contribute to overall well-being
  • Engage in conversations and programming in relation to sexual assault prevention, alcohol awareness, and maintain a positive mental health in college
  • Identify ways to stay safe on-campus and the UIC staff who can help them
  • Practice simple actions that promote safety such as locking their door, maintaining awareness of their surroundings, and informing staff when issues arise
  • Understand the shared responsibility in creating a safe environment across campus and their place of living

 

Cultural Competency

We will encourage residents to interact with their own identities, understand the identities of others, and recognize the value of difference. We will facilitate opportunities for residents to practice inclusion, equity, respect, and empathy. Residents should:

  • Build a foundation of knowledge related to the importance of diversity in identity and thought
  • Develop an understanding of the social implications of difference, including power, privilege, equity, and inequity
  • Engage in dialogues about identity, belief, intersectionality, and difference
  • Identify the positive or negative impact of their language and actions on their peers
  • Practice addressing issues surrounding inclusion and inequity in their communities
  • Understand how recognizing and valuing diversity and inclusion promotes a safer, stronger community

 

Career Readiness

We will prepare students to create success in their next professional or academic endeavor. Residents should:

  • Build goals for their post-college path and investigate what groundwork should be laid early to be successful
  • Develop professional materials including portfolios, résumés, and cover letters
  • Engage with academic resources and advisors to set an appropriate academic path based on their career goals
  • Identify important career-related experiences to achieve before graduation
  • Practice interview, networking, and presentation skills
  • Understand the importance of using their time at UIC judiciously to prepare for their post-graduate plans
