Student Affairs Assessment and Planning

Welcome to Student Affairs Assessment and Planning

Guided by our core values of student learning, development, and success, the Assessment and Planning team partners with units across Student Affairs to enhance their work through data-informed decision-making, strategic planning, and research. We provide resources, consultation, and project management support to help teams elevate their impact on the student experience.

Assessment is the foundation of continuous improvement. We support the division in developing intentional, systematic approaches to assess student learning outcomes and program effectiveness. Our team leads key divisional initiatives, including annual goals & outcomes and program review. We also offer groundbreaking professional development opportunities, such as assessment workshops and the Assessment Working Group, to boost staff skills and capacity in assessment practices.

Planning in Student Affairs is a strategic process that empowers divisional efforts in alignment with institutional priorities. Within this area, we offer project management and grant support. Project Management ensures that programs and initiatives are executed efficiently and effectively. Whether launching a new collaborative effort or implementing an evidence-based program, we provide the tools and support to bring ideas to life. Grant Support recognizes both that budget constraints do not always allow the division to provide services to the level that is needed by students, and that local, state and federal funding opportunities exist that can fill the funding gap. Grant Support identifies grant opportunities, works with divisional staff to conceptualize projects, writes grant applications, and liaises with campus partners to submit grants.

Research is a process of inquiry that entails investigating a topic to generate new knowledge, test theories, or solve problems. Research seeks to discover new knowledge while assessment aims to improve existing programs, processes, or outcomes. The Office of Assessment and Planning collects, analyzes, and interprets data on students facing basic needs insecurity (food, clothing, and shelter), financial challenges, and other student-focused barriers to academic and student success. We often collaborate with colleagues within the Student Affairs division and across the university, including through initiatives like the Faculty Fellows program. Much of this work is made possible through external funding.
